Grade Three Reading Journals
A record of what we read is very important. It helps us to remember exactly what we read, authors’ names we love, to list books on a subject or a particular genre and to notice what we are reading. Keeping a reading record does not need to be an arduous undertaking but something that promotes a meaningful, precious record – a history of ourselves as a reader. This week the students on Grade Three were asked to decide on the format and book that they are going to use to keep a worthwhile record of their reading. They could use a school notebook, or a journal or book of their own choosing. Their record will not include number of pages read, but instead be as simple and easily undertaken as possible. We hope that our students will create something that they can actually refer back to, and perhaps even continue outside of Grade Three. We expect it to become a relevant tool in their reading lives. Perhaps you would like to support your child by modelling the use of a reading record!
Spelling in Grade Three
In Grade Three our spelling programme is developmental. Children progress at their own rate and we support their learning at their developmental stage. We have assessed the students spelling to identify their stage of development and the classes will be grouped accordingly. Some features of our spelling programme are:
-The children will learn spelling strategies and rules that will assist them when they are trying to spell unfamiliar words
-There is a place for memorization spelling for certain words. We will teach the children which words should be memorized. There are key “accountability words”, very common words that are used in every day writing. We call these words “High Frequency” words and the children are aware that these are the words they are expected to spell correctly all the time.
-The children will learn common patterns used in spelling. Word sorting is an effective way for the children to learn common patterns and will be a feature of the programme both at school and at home.
-We will be focusing on developing the children’s “spelling consciousness”. As we explore words through spelling and meaning, your child will begin to develop a curiosity and interest in words that will carry over into reading and other academic areas.
